If deep pockets have formed between your teeth and gums, you have gum disease. If this is the case, you will want to visit us at our periodontal practice, Mitchell Bloom for treatment by our expert periodontist, Dr. Mitchell J. Bloom. When you need treatment involving
periodontics in New York NY, you cannot do better than to come to our periodontal practice for care.
If deep pockets have developed between your teeth and gums, the type of
periodontics in New York NY that you will most likely need is to have a scaling and root planing treatment. This treatment is effective in helping the gums to heal in most cases of mild-to-moderate gum disease. A periodontal scaling and root planing treatment is often referred to as a deep cleaning for the gums. It differs from a regular dental cleaning during which the gums are only cleaned just slightly below the gum line. When our periodontist is providing a scaling and root planing treatment, he may want to give you a local anesthesia to make the treatment more comfortable for you. During the scaling portion of the treatment, all debris will be removed from the crown and root surfaces of your teeth. Ultrasonic and hand scaling equipment may be used. After all of the calculus is removed, a root planing may be performed using hand instruments during which the root surfaces of the tooth are smoothed. This will make it much less likely that any materials will build up on the root surfaces which can cause periodontal disease. Sometimes, after this is performed, the deep pockets may be topically treated with antibiotics to help any infection to heal. Our periodontist may prescribe oral antibiotics for you, as well. If this treatment is not successful, our periodontist may either repeat the procedure, or provide some type of pocket reduction surgery.
If you are having problems with gum disease, you will want to see our office for
periodontics in New York NY so that you will be sure to receive complete gum care.
