Gum Disease Lenox Hill
If you have problems with gum disease, you will want to visit us at our periodontal practice, Mitchell Bloom. Our top-notch periodontist, Dr. Mitchell J. Bloom, will be able to provide you with expert periodontal care to treat your
gum disease Lenox Hill.
When our periodontist examines your gums, he will determine which stage of
gum disease Lenox Hill you have. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. During this time, there is some inflammation of the gums which is usually caused by dental plaque and tartar which has irritated the gums by getting just below the gum line. When a patient has gingivitis, their gums are inflamed, but deep pockets have not formed. Generally, several regular dental cleanings will be effective in treating this type of early gum disease. During the regular dental cleanings, all plaque and tartar will be removed from the surface of the teeth, between teeth, and from just below the gum line. If you are found to have moderate periodontitis, it means that deep pockets have formed between the teeth and gums, and you will need to have a scaling and root planing treatment. During a scaling and root planing treatment all tartar, plaque, bacteria and food debris are removed from the deep pockets. This should allow the deep pockets to heal. Sometimes this treatment needs to be provided to the patient more than once. This scaling and root planing treatment will remove all plaque and tartar which is causing the formation of the deep pockets in the first place. This is a nonsurgical procedure and can effectively treat gingivitis in mild to moderate periodontitis. One way our periodontist may choose to kill bacteria that is causing the periodontal disease is to treat it locally with antibiotics or with oral antibiotic treatment. In the most advance cases of periodontal disease or with chronic periodontitis, additional treatment will be needed which may include preventive gum care, or gum surgery to help the gums to heal.
